Introduction to Polyvagal Theory
Many people try to solve their life using thoughts. They read the books, listen to the podcasts, work on their beliefs, and try harder to be disciplined. Underneath all of that thinking is something quieter and considerably more powerful: the state of the autonomic nervous system.
Before going further, one thing should be said plainly: I did not invent these ideas.
Where this comes from
The scientific foundation here belongs primarily to the neuroscientist Stephen W. Porges, who introduced polyvagal theory in the 1990s. His work has since influenced trauma therapy, somatic psychology, attachment science, and many body-based disciplines.
My framework builds on those insights and translates them into everyday language and practical tools. The roots belong to the researchers who helped us see the nervous system differently.
The core idea
Polyvagal theory proposes that the nervous system is constantly asking a single question: am I safe right now?
This evaluation happens automatically, below conscious awareness. Porges calls it neuroception. When the system detects safety, one set of responses becomes available. When it detects danger or uncertainty, the system shifts into protective states. Those states are not psychological flaws. They are biological survival strategies, and they are doing their job.
Whether you feel open or guarded, curious or overwhelmed, connected or withdrawn is not only psychological. It is physiological.
Three broad states
Polyvagal theory describes three broad physiological states. These are useful as maps, not as a rigid taxonomy — real life is more continuous than any three-colour diagram suggests.
Ventral vagal — safety. When the nervous system senses safety, this system is active. It is the state where relationships grow and learning happens most easily. Here we can connect with others, feel emotionally open, think clearly, and experience curiosity and play.
Sympathetic activation — mobilisation. When the system senses danger or pressure, it may shift into activation. This state is not bad. It is extremely useful when energy is needed to move or respond. But staying here too long strains the system. People in this state often feel anxious, restless, angry, hyper-focused on solving problems, or compelled to act quickly.
Dorsal vagal — shutdown. When the system judges that danger cannot be escaped, it may shift into shutdown. This is a conservation state: the body reduces energy output to survive an overwhelming situation. It is routinely misread as laziness or a lack of motivation. Physiologically, it is protection. People here may experience exhaustion, numbness, disconnection, withdrawal, or flatness.
Understanding these states changes how behaviour is interpreted. Much of what people try to solve with willpower is actually a regulation problem. It is not about personality or discipline. It is about state and capacity.
How this connects to my framework
My work builds on these ideas by asking three practical questions:
- What state is my nervous system in right now?
- What is my current capacity?
- What action supports regulation rather than erosion?
This is why I describe daily life using the green, yellow, and red zones. Green means there is enough safety and capacity to stay open. Yellow means activation is rising and wants attention. Red means capacity has been exceeded and restoration is what is needed.
Polyvagal theory explains why those states exist. My framework is concerned with how we navigate them in daily life — which is a different, and deliberately more practical, question.
